Also the YoYo and Zebras patterns began morphing, becoming more distinguished and increasingly jumbled, while the Emperor Loach and it's beautiful thick black band's remained unchanged.ģ month's later and the YoYo's are clearly the largest of the three at nearly 4 inches. One month later the YoYo's tripled in size, the Zebras doubled in size and the Emperor remained almost the same. ![]() At first these 3 are nearly identical in size. At first I thought it was a Golden Zebra except the bands are darker and thicker and appear to split slightly down the middle.ĭuring my "journey" of finding histrionica I actually wound up with 3 different Loach species: Golden zebra, YoYo and the Emperor Loach. Somehow I managed to snag my first specimen 3 month's ago while searching for Golden Zebra's. What creates the high price for this species is the logistics of obtaining it in the wild." Superficially similar in appearance to botia rostrata. First described in 2007 and first caught in about 1993. Paraphrasing: "a species that is highly desirable and virtually unobtainable. And apparently also sold unknowingly by my big box LFS's as Golden Zebra Loaches.Īccording to these are referred to often as the holy grail. As juveniles they are also very similar in size, color and pattern to the YoYo and Histrionica. There is another species known as Botia udomritthirujI aka Emperor Loach. Though they start out at about the same size It only took about a month to see the difference as their growth rates and transformation of their patterns are dramatically different. In any case with both these species it can be difficult and confusing to differentiate between them as juveniles. I often found both species mixed together, either because they came that way from breeder's or were dumped in the same tank by the LFS's. Well it turned out to be a fascinating journey in which I learned that big box LFS's sometimes unknowingly sell YoYo Loaches labeled as Zebra Loaches and Zebra Loaches labeled as YoYo's. Several months ago, (see my older post in this forum), I embarked on what I thought would be a "simple" task of finding Golden Zebra Loaches (aka botia histrionica) locally, for a species only Loach tank. ![]() So here's one for all the Loach enthusiasts, after this brief introduction: (skip next paragraph to cut to the chase). ![]()
